Andrew, you estimate to land between 170 and 200 k$ for the build..... I can't think of a family near me with 2 kids that have such an amount in excess for a leisure vehicule People in SA, AU or US must make a ton of money I can imagine a high end Hymer van to end up in that range, but aren't you building the thing yourself ? Curious to see where this is going - I do like the brainstorm sessions .... having redone and improved the interior of my 130 a few. Every trip provides new insights and experiences

I 100% want modular, to transform from 1 adult to 2 adults to 2 adults with 2 children (car seating included), and preferably swivel seats at front of car if possible / legal options avail for the Hiace

what about anchor points for a hammock in a van, so no bed in the way until bed.

I just don't understand why 4x4 vans aren't a standard option here!

Please stop saying you are the first to do this. Thousands of vans have been converted, perhaps millions to campers. Toyota have made 4wd vans. Treat this as another build that may turn out great that uses all your sponsors and business partners products. Please be honest with us.

I think you should push the mechanical build as close to the Volvo C303 as possible. Looks promising but I'm not quite there yet.

Wait until you get sand in the sliding door rollers. Those plastic rollers will disintegrate and the sliding door won't open and shut easily anymore.

Hiace wont last off road , and rolling is going to be an issue just like the Delica /l1300 . Handling on road loaded is not a vehicle i'd recommend. Accident impact is death machine stuff on any angle.

Funny as it is, people DON'T report their successful experiences online very often. But when things go wrong, look the f*** out! Hi Andrew, Great story. The wine bag had a nic name of "Goonie bag" and doubled for a pillow after the wine had been drunk. All so had a simpler problem with carburetor, driving and then poor idling and then it became full throttle and poor idle, the nuts had back off and the peddle spring was rotating the carburetor off the manifold. Loving this Hiace series and seeing it perform off road after the conversion. Will you be looking at what Toyota parts from the taxi versions can be used for the bench seat, windows and flooring ? From memory of the high end shuttle bus version in Kruger, the utility track was part of the flooring, so the benches and seats could be moved around for luggage space and or removed easily.

Great point on height of the 270 awnings. It should be adjustable. I'm 6'5" a dread ducking under awnings. Love the visualization that you're sharing.

Question, you mentioned recover points, what is the strength of this van compared to a chassis based off roader? How do you test or know it is strong enough to be pulled with force in a recovery situation?

I have had several vans and found the best way is a double bed on a frame with 400mm clearance under it. 10ltr jerry cans fit under it. Slide boxs under the bed that have cloths food water and tools in them. Always put water containers in a plastic box because if they leak it is a nightmare to pull everything out dry the floor mat and insulation. I use rubber matting on the floor. Easy to keep clean tough and helps reduce noise levels. The bed goes right to the back of the van. Build a shelf across the front with gas ring fridge ect and shelf space for cooking. You sit on the bed for cooking and is an all weather set up.

7:29 ....err its upside down mate, there ya go, figured it out, spin the unit around 😂🤷‍♂ I think 95% of the issues you're having is that you're slightly technologically challenged. But that does then come back on them a little because they should have made the instructions clearer as you say. You should have also got someone at the store to come out and SHOW you how to set it up and get it going properly.

love this build. what type and size of tires are on it? currently building an old square body transit awd and its greatly limited in terms of tires compared to regular 4x4's...

I think 180 degree awning would be better than a 270 - you have the tail gate for shelter at the rear and you could always design a canvas rain gutter that you could velco between the awning and the inside of the tailgate (when up) joining the two. Also - check out how they set up the back kitchen area of the tear drop trailer/campers - some really good ideas there - a "pass through" my also be handy

Andrew with all due respect you rarely taking your vehicles off road, pretty much any 4wd van or pickup truck will be miles ahead of your troopy on those corrugated gravel roads. Your are missing on some great drives because of your troopy affair :-)
